MDC Basketball

We are excited to launch a Specialised Basketball Program at Mater Dei College to commence in 2021.

In 2021, the program will have a number of elements, providing a variety of opportunities to students from Years 7-12, allowing students to explore their interest in Basketball and enhance their skills and knowledge of the game.

For students in Years 8-10 in 2021 the program will be embedded into the timetable with students being able to choose Basketball as an Elective. For students in Years 8 and 9 this will comprise two periods a week and for Year 10’s, this will extend to four periods a week for the entirety of the school year for all relevant year groups.

Open to all students from Years 7-12 will be access to extra-curricular skill development clinics through the College’s partnership with Skyplay Basketball. These after school programs held at the College will further assist students in developing their basketball skills for the domestic, WABL and school based competitions. These sessions will open to players of all skill levels and include opportunities in playing, coaching and officiating. The College will also provide opportunity for students to take part in representative basketball through the Associated Catholic Colleges CAS Competition and School Sport WA.

From a timetabling perspective for students from Years 8-10 the College will be looking to avoid clashing with the AFL Hawks Academy, hopefully providing the opportunity for students to be part of both programs, should they so wish. At this stage however, we cannot guarantee future scheduling clashes outside of school hours.

For students enrolled in Years 8-10 in 2021 wishing to choose Basketball, they simply need to include it in the subject selection choices for next year. Students from 7-12 wishing to take part in the Skyplay extra-curricular program can register starting this Term by emailing Amber Sunderland, Head of Physical and Health Education at This email address is being protected from spambots. This program promises to be another exciting initiative of the College as we continue to enhance the engagements of students in the school in a number of ever growing areas.
