MATER DEI COLLEGE HAWKS, AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL ACADEMY

INTRODUCTION

Mater Dei College (MDC) introduced its Australian Football League (AFL) Hawks Academy in 2018. The program is available to boys and girls in Years 7 to 12 who wish to pursue excellence in the sport of AFL.

AIMS OF THE PROGRAM

The MDC Hawks AFL Academy aims to provide talented students with an opportunity to further develop their footballing ability, with an emphasis on skill development and gameplay strategies and tactics. 

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM

The Academy follows the structure of a Specialised Physical Education (SPE) class, made up of practical and theoretical lessons. This structure reflects the commitment of the College towards the football development of all players/students within the MDC Hawks Academy.

Throughout the year, keynote speakers from the West Perth Football Club (FC), West Coast Eagles FC and Fremantle Dockers FC feature in delivering leadership advice and football development coaching to our young players. 

In addition to students footballing development, students will be led through umpiring and coaching principles to encourage involvement in other roles of our game and supporting the growth of AFL. 

Students are provided with a holistic footballing education, players of the Academy will also have the opportunity to achieve a Level 1 Certificate in Sports Training, Certificate I in Sport & Recreation, Level 1 Coaching Accreditation, as well as a Level 1 Umpiring accreditation.

There are a multitude of AFL industry related Certificate, University Qualifications and Career pathways as well as

  • WA State Academy Pathway
  • WAFL Colts selection
  • AFL Pathway

SELECTION CRITERIA

The MDC Hawks Academy caters for full time students enrolled at Mater Dei College. The College welcomes applications from bothcurrent students and prospective students. Selection will be based on both academic performance and physical skill levels assessed during trials conducted at the College. A positive attitudes towards both aspects will be an important part of selection in the program and reports will be required from the student’s current school.

Successful applicants will be required to sign an Academy contract committing to the following expectations:

  • Maintain an excellent attendance and behaviour record.
  • Display a positive attitude towards the College ethos.
  • Participate consistently and to the best of their ability throughout their involvement in the program.
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards their academic studies.
  • Participate in College sporting activities other than AFL

APPLICATION PROCESS

Entry to the MDC Hawks AFL Academy is based on academic performance, physical skill levels and is subject to a successful application and acceptance into Mater Dei College. This application process is conducted in the year in which the applying student is in Year Five.

Year Six students who are successful in their application to the College will be contacted in March and invited to trial for: 

1) entry into the Hawks AFL Academy and 

2) consideration for an AFL Scholarship.

Skill and fitness tests for the Hawks AFL Acdemy will be held in May with a second trial date in late July to allow for students unable to attend due to injury or representative sporting commitments.

Current Coaching Staff

The MDC Hawks Academy is committed to providing players the highest standard of coaching and teaching. All Football staff involved in the program are accredited with a National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) Level 1 AFL Coaching Qualification combined with experience playing at an elite level.
