Materials

Students design and produce a Jewellery Box.  This project introduces new skills of laminating materials, complex design and material selection.  Finishing, application of various surface finishes and surface preparation.  Students put these new skills into action, in the design and production of their own Jewellery Box.  Students may also design and produce a small end table.  This project introduces new skills of designing for a client, complex design and material selection.  Leg & Rail method for the timber joint frame construction and application of various surface finishes to the completed project.  Students put these new skills into action, in the design and production of their own End Table.  Production of a portfolio in which students investigate, explore ideas and follow a design process in response to a design brief.  Students are required to evaluate the final solution’s effectiveness for specific purposes and audiences.

Engineering

Students design and manufacture a remote-controlled hovercraft.  This project introduces new skills of shaping materials, complex design and material selection.  Students put these new skills into action, in the design and production of their own Hovercraft.  The effectiveness of the design will be tested on an obstacle circuit track with time keeping.  Students are required to evaluate the final solution’s effectiveness in design, shape, decoration, manoeuvrability and speed.  Students are also required to discuss three of Newton’s Laws in the context of the Hovercraft.
