This year has been an exciting year for the LOTE
Department with many new programs in place, promoting the importance of learning
a second language, particularly with our strong physical and economic ties to
Asia. We also had two new staff members join the department. Mrs Rosanne Jacobs,
Japanese teacher and LOTE Coordinator and Mr Peter McKenzie, teaching English
and Asian Studies, who will also be teaching Japanese language in 2009. They
joined Mrs Nicole Avery who teaches Indonesian and Society and Environment.
For the first time at Mater Dei College, we hosted 4 students from Salatiga in
Central Java. This gave our language students an excellent opportunity to
practise their skills as well exchange culture with teenagers from Indonesia. We
are hoping to establish further ties with Yasa Luhur Language School and this
may lead to future exchanges with students from Mater Dei College being able to
tour Indonesia.
Nine students from Year 11 & 12 participated in the Japan Tour in April of this
year and we signed our first sister school agreement with Fukui High school.
This tour will be expanded in 2009 to include travelling to Tokyo and Hiroshima
to experience the modern as well the traditional side of Japanese life.
One of the biggest changes in our curriculum was the introduction of compulsory
Year 9 LOTE which has broadened our students’ knowledge of both the language and
the culture of these countries. We also introduced the subject of Asian Studies
for Year 9 students. This was an exciting and innovative programme which
investigated a series of countries across Asia, researching the language and
culture of several nations. We also had many students electing to do the
‘Specialist’ course which has seen their language skills develop to an
exceptional level.
Year 8’s again had the opportunity to learn their chosen language for a full
year and this has been very successful with the students showing great
enthusiasm for the subject. Year 10 Japanese students also, have been very
impressive with their excellent language skills and commitment to their language
studies.
We are looking forward to another great year in 2009!
みなさん、ありがとう! Terima kasih!
