CAREERLINK
2008 has been another successful year for our
senior students taking part in the CareerLink program. This success is
measured by the individual accomplishments in the two components of the
program – the Vocational Education and Training courses and the subject
Structured Workplace Learning. Both aspects have contributed towards
secondary graduation and provided valuable experience and industry based
certification that will path the way for our students future career
aspirations.
Six MDC students were the recipients of awards recognizing outstanding
achievement in the nationally accredited training courses, attended by
students from all nine CareerLink schools. Sinead Scally and Sally
Mayall were named the ‘Student of the Year’ in the Leadership and Animal
Studies courses and Matthew Godfrey, Brendon Sivwright, Caitlin Crawford
and Jessica Fogliani won the ‘Endeavour Awards’ in the Automotive,
Engineering (Electrical), Children Services and Hospitality courses
respectively.
Other successes for students included the securing of full time
apprentiships and part time employment and the less tangible but equally
valuable attainment of skills, experience and knowledge to further their
vocational education.
Continued success to those CareerLink students leaving school this year
and to those who will be a part of the CareerLink program in 2009.

Career Development
A new Career Development initiative emerged this year- a Work Readiness
course for Year 10 students. Eighteen Year 10 students applied for
Career Link and the Work Readiness Course at Central TAFE in this pilot
project.
From February to April, the students and I met four periods a cycle to
complete CareerLink’s huge application form and to learn the
requirements for being successful TAFE students. Students acquired
Safety certificates. Finally, the students were assisted in learning job
search skills and resume writing. In April they began their study at
TAFE. The most interesting feature of the TAFE component was the
different excursions the students took to different parts of the TAFE
that prepared people for occupations in business, art, hairdressing and
horticulture. The most difficult skill they had to learn is organising
oneself for private study.
By August each Work Readiness student had found a workplace. Thanks to
Dr Les Fabre the group did a mini four week “Rock and Water For Work
Experience” course before commencing their fifteen days of work
experience. Because of its success, the programme will continue in 2009.
