2008 has been a productive year in Visual Arts at Mater Dei. A change of
staff teaching in the department has seen some interesting and diverse
creations in multiple art mediums. The diversity of the teacher’s
skills, interests and life experiences is often reflected in the
creative projects completed by the art students. It is always
interesting to see the individual styles evolve as the students explore
the subject matter and art mediums they are using.
Under the direction of Miss Valentine the Yr 12 Art students have
created some well composed paintings and graphics, approaching varied
themes such as “Journey” and “Who am I,” their creative efforts were
rewarded in the display of their work in the Showcase gallery setting.
The Yr 11 Art students refined their skills as they explored Drawing,
Etching, Painting and ceramics. Both groups took advantage of a trip
into the city in term one resulting in some CBD inspired compositions.
The Year 8-10 Art and Craft classes gained valuable experience in varied
art mediums from linocut printing, silk dyeing, clay sculpting and
textiles. Mr Hurd drew inspiration from his experiences in India and
created some large iconic Elephant paintings with his Yr 8 Art classes.
A number of art works were entered into the Angelico Exhibition again
this year including some upper school paintings, a textile piece, and a
group project of 25 linocut prints onto one canvas. This group artwork
entitled “A Dogs Life” won a Highly Commended Award for the years 8-10
category.
Many thanks to Mrs Martinovic our Art technician who has been of great
assistance organising storage areas and preparing work for exhibiting.
Many students have taken advantage of the relaxed art studio setting in
the department, utilising their time, developing designs and resolving
their artworks aesthetic qualities. Congratulations to all art students
on some fine original work this year. We look forward to 2009 with some
new courses beginning and new creative directions.
