Careers Advice and Programs at Mater Dei College

The Careers Team at Mater Dei College aims to provide comprehensive and high quality careers information and support to the School community. This includes information on events, scholarships, open days, employment, training and much more.

The Careers area is well equipped to assist students in all aspects of Career Counselling and offers appropriate software and information technology facilities. Here, also, students can seek assistance with the writing of resumes and job applications.

Optional work experience advice, placement assistance and University and TAFE information are also offered. The CareerLink Coordinator also plays an active role in communicating careers and higher education information to students.

Parents and students are welcome to make an appointment with one of the careers staff.

Register your interest in becoming a Host Employer

Year Ten Work Experience is a special time which allows students to experience their first taste of the ‘world of work’, and explore a variety of occupations which may lead them to future employment.

At MDC we strongly encourage students to learn job seeking skills. A skill which is vitally important and which students are expected to explore, is the ability to negotiate with a prospective employer to secure a Work Experience position. This can be somewhat daunting even with parental assistance and students often experience some negative responses when attempting to find a Host Employer who is willing to provide a Work Experience placement.

With this in mind, the College would like to set up a data base of companies that would be willing to become a Host Employer and take on a Year 10 Work Experience student. Students would have access to the Host Employer information via a College data base and could then contact companies to negotiate a Work Experience placement. Once a Host Employer has agreed to take a work place student, that employer would be labelled “current placement” on the College data base until such time as the work place student has completed their term.

Host Employers may set their own conditions and need not feel obligated to take a student for a full week, however for students to fully experience the ‘world of work’, a 5 to 6 day placement is preferred.

If you would like to register your interest in becoming a Host Employer, or know of a company that would be willing to become a Host Employer, please complete one of the following forms.

Completed forms can be sent to the College by post,  Fax: 93062629 or email: jean.wojcik@mdc.wa.edu.au

Some of our senior students do not attend school one day in each week from February to October – yet they are still furthering their education! These students participate in the Vocational Education and Training program called CareerLink.

During the first fifteen weeks students completed a full Certificate l or ll in a choice of 20 different courses held at nationally registered training providers such as TAFE . These achievements were recognised at the Graduation and Awards Night held at the Perth Convention Centre, in September. Together with students from eleven other schools, our students were presented with their certificates and were the proud recipients of four special awards. Student of the Year in the Leadership course was awarded to Paul Spano and Clinton Guiffre, Luke Kristivich and Reagan Crook were presented with Endeavour Awards in the Construction, Automotive and Engineering courses!

From mid June students set off once a week to their workplace, where they were able to build on their earlier training and gain valuable experience in an industry area of their choice. Working alongside chefs in restaurants; companioning the Aged in care; helping a real estate agent with a home appraisal; or assisting a mechanic while servicing a vehicle, are just some of the places where our students spent their days out of school! After completing 120 hours “on the job” and an extensive skills list the students achieved the subject Structured Workplace Learning.

In addition to attaining full certificates and a school subject that assists with entrance to TAFE and further training, our students have gained many extra benefits. These include commendations for the Leadership Course group for their work in the local community, and offers of employment and apprenticeships!
